Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations

Toyota Tundra Gen. 2 and Gen. 3 Trucks are extremely popular and Filthy Motorsports works with customers every day doing everything from simple King shock replacements (like this kit) to full race-spec long travel kits. These trucks are an excellent platform, but there are a few very important tips that we have to keep in mind to build them well:

1. The front suspension geometry allows for about 9" of wheel travel with the factory upper control arms which is plenty for most applications when combined with well tuned coilovers. For performance applications, replacing the factory upper control arms with aftermarket Icon or SPC UCAs will allow for up to 12" of wheel travel (depending on tires and fenders) when paired with King coilovers built for extended travel.

2. DO NOT use coilover pre-load to lift the vehicle over 2.5" with factory UCAs or 3" with aftermarket UCAs. Lifting a Tundra beyond those limits puts the CV shafts, steering linkages, tie rod ends, and control arms at steeper angles which reduces ride quality significantly and causes those components to wear out faster. If you want more than 2.5" to 3" of lift AND excellent performance, you will need an aftermarket lift kit that drops the lower control arms and front differential.

Complete Suspension Upgrade Recommendations

Improving the performance and handling of a Gen. 2 and 3 Toyota Tacoma can be done in many ways on many different budgets, however, it's always best to not spend your hard earned money twice to get your desired results. With that in mind, Filthy Motorsports recommends choosing one of the following options:

1. Best Performance For a Work Truck:
If you use your Tundra as a work truck and need to retain the factory load capacity, we recommend replacing the front struts with these King OEM coilovers and replacing the rear shocks with these King OEM 2.5 rear shocks. Filthy Motorsports will select the proper front coilover springs and shock valving for you to significantly improve the overall ride and handling of the truck and prevent the factory rear leaf springs from unloading.

2. Best Off-Road Performance on a Budget:
For optimal off-road performance and handling on a reasonable budget, Filthy Motorsports recommends this complete King OEM kit, front and rear with SPC upper control arms and front coilovers built with the extended travel option. This combination allows for improved front suspension travel, maximum tire size, and the ability to adjust caster and camber for a perfect alignment. The rear shocks will work great with the factory rear leafs and can accommodate up to 2" of lift. For added fine tuning consider adding the compression adjusters (this is highly recommended for Tundras that spend most of their time on the street and highways).

3. Best Overall Ride Quality on a Budget:
For those that want the best overall ride quality on and off-road, Filthy Motorsports recommends King OEM coilovers up front with compression adjusters, built to extended travel specs and paired with SPC upper control arms. For the rear, we suggest changing the rear leaf springs to a custom set of Deavers and pairing them with King OEM 2.5 rear shocks also with compression adjusters to round out the package. This combination allows for maximum suspension travel all around and the best overall ride quality.

4. Race-Spec Long Travel:
If your driving style or needs require running down logging roads, forest roads or through the desert at speeds over 60mph for extended periods of time, Filthy Motorsports recommends looking into a full race-spec long travel suspension system with coilovers, bypasses and hydraulic bump stops. Contact us directly for details.

Remember, all orders are treated as custom orders and we will review the spring rates, valving, and configuration to make sure they not only fit the vehicle, but also match your expectations and goals.

5 of 5 Very Happy April 3, 2018
Reviewer: James from Littleton, CO
I wanted to let you know that I am very happy with the suspension so far. We just got back from a trip to Moab and the truck handled great while fully loaded with all our stuff. I have about 2,300 miles or so on the new suspension and the truck seems more planted while on road, especially when cornering, and a lot more stable and controlled while off road.
