Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations

Toyota 2010 and newer FJ Cruisers are extremely popular platforms for daily drivers, weekend wheelers, expedition use, and desert racing vehicles. Each of these applications require different suspension attributes and Filthy Motorsports works directly with each customer to make sure the spring rates, valving, and overall configuration of the suspension is in line with their needs and expectations. With that in mind, there are a few important things we need to consider when building a well tuned suspension system for a FJ Cruiser:

1. The front suspension geometry is allows for about 8" of wheel travel leveraged to about 4" of movement on the coilover. For the best performance, the coilovers should be set close to mid-shaft or about 2" to 2.5" over stock height. For added movement, an aftermarket upper control arm (UCA) can be used to allow for an extra 3/4" of down travel when the coilovers are built with the extended travel option.

2. DO NOT use coilover pre-load to lift the vehicle over 2.5". The factory geometry works best at about 2" over stock and lifting it beyond 2.5" will cause the CV shafts, steering linkages, tie rod ends, and control arms to run at excessive angles that will reduce ride quality and component life. If you want more than 2.5" of lift and excellent performance, you will need an aftermarket lift kit.

Complete Suspension Upgrade Recommendations

Improving the performance and handling of a 2010 and newer FJ Cruiser can be done in many ways on many different budgets, however, it's always best to not spend your hard earned money twice to get your desired results. With that in mind, Filthy Motorsports recommends choosing one of the following options:

1. Best Performance on a Budget: [ $2,215 Delivered ]
If you don't have a lot to spend and your FJ Cruiser will be your daily driver, we recommend these King coilovers up front and King shocks in the rear with factory front upper control arms and factory rear springs.

2. Best Trail Runner Performance: [ $2,790 - $2,950 Delivered ]
For those that want the best performance off-road and on the trails, Filthy Motorsports recommends these King OEM coilovers up front built with extended travel and paired with SPC Upper Control Arms. In the rear we recommend 1.5" to 2" lift springs paired with these King rear shocks. If you plan to add a significant amount of weight in the form of bumpers, armor, and gear, we'll increase the coilover spring rates as needed.

3. Best Desert Racing Performance on a Budget: [$3,455 - $4,595 Delivered ]
Building a race-race ready desert vehicle can get very expensive very quickly. Luckily, on a relatively affordable budget, the FJ Cruiser can be made to exceed the capabilities of most drivers off-road and in the desert. For moderate to aggressive desert runs, we recommend these King OEM coilovers up front built to extended length with compression adjusters and paired with Camburg uni-ball Upper Control Arms. For the rear, we suggest 2-3" lift springs with either King OEM rear shocks or Filthy Motorsports spec 2.5 King double bypass shocks and 2" bump stop spacers.

4. Race-Spec Long Travel:
If your driving style or needs require running down logging roads, forest roads or through the desert at speeds over 60mph for extended periods of time, Filthy Motorsports recommends looking into a full race-spec long travel suspension system with coilovers, bypasses and hydraulic bump stops. Contact us directly for details.

King Compression Adjusters Upgrade
Add 16 levels of compression valving adjustments to your King OEM shocks with King's proprietary compression adjustable reservoirs. Easily switch from a soft, street-friendly ride to stiff, race-ready valving by simply turning the adjustment knob on the reservoirs. Includes custom valving.

External Bypass Tubes Upgrade
For OEM applications where space permits, up to four externally adjustable bypass tubes can be added for compression and rebound zone tuning. Bypass tubes are placed in strategic areas on the shock and are paired with special valving for the ultimate shock setup.

Custom Colors and Finishes
While the standard King-blue components look spectacular, your custom color and finish options are only limited by your imagination. Available finishes include color anodizing, color powder coating, black zinc coating, chrome plating, and even gold plating. Contact us for pricing.

SPC UCAs SPC Adjustable Upper Control Arms
SPC upper control arms feature a greaseable, heavy duty, zero-play, high-misalignment ball joint for increased down travel and significantly improved durability and are adjustable ± 2.0° in camber and -1.0° to +3.0° in caster for perfect alignment.

Camburg UCAs Camburg Racing Upper Control Arms
Camburg desert racing upper control arms feature welded and heat treated chromoly arms, over-sized uniball joints, and polyurethane bushings or heim joints for added strength, increased wheel travel, and improved long-travel geometry for aggressive off-road driving.



King OEM Performance Shock Upgrade Kits are direct bolt-on replacement shocks and/or coilovers for your vehicle and come custom tuned for the ultimate balance of on-road handling and off-road performance. They include all of the necessary hardware you need for a bolt-on installation that can easily be done over the weekend. Custom length shafts and cylinders are available to work with any brand and size lift kit. Additional options include compression adjusting reservoirs, custom colors, internal or external bypass tubes, and race-spec valving.



Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding
All OEM upgrade shocks and coilovers are hand-built with the same parts as all of King's other Performance Race Series shocks. They are completely serviceable, tunable, and rebuildable to last a lifetime and it only requires a few simple hand tools, a few hours, and the appropriate King replacement parts from Filthy Motorsports. If you prefer not to do the work yourself, you can always bring (or send) your shocks to us and we will service them for you within one business day.
