Toyota FJ Cruiser King Shocks OEM Kit Models

Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations
Toyota 2010 and newer FJ Cruisers are extremely popular platforms for daily drivers, weekend wheelers, expedition use, and desert racing vehicles. Each of these applications require different suspension attributes and Filthy Motorsports works directly with each customer to make sure the spring rates, valving, and overall configuration of the suspension is in line with their needs and expectations. With that in mind, there are a few important things we need to consider when building a well tuned suspension system for a FJ Cruiser:
1. The rear shock mounts are very close together on these vehicles so King had to use every trick they have to make a set of 2.5 smoothies fit properly. As a result, the King OEM rear shocks will only work with aftermarket rear springs up to 1.5" or 2" of lift. A rule of thumb we've discovered is that if the aftermarket springs require a bump stop spacer, the OEM King shocks will limit your down travel. If you plan to install lift or overload springs taller than 2", the rear shocks will need to be built to custom length and we will work with you directly to make sure they are built correctly.
2. The front suspension geometry is very tight with about 8" of wheel travel leveraged to about 4" of movement on the coilover. For the best performance, the coilovers should be set at mid-shaft or about 2" over stock height. For added movement, an aftermarket upper control arm (UCA) can be used to allow for an extra 3/4" of down travel when the coilovers are built with the extended travel option.
3. DO NOT use coilover pre-load to lift the vehicle over 2". The factory geometry works best at about 1.5" to 2" over stock and lifting it more than that puts the CV shafts, steering linkages, tie rod ends, and control arms at steeper angles which reduces ride quality significantly and causes those components to wear out faster. If you want more than 2" of lift AND excellent performance, you will need an aftermarket lift kit that drops the lower control arm and front differential.
Complete Suspension Upgrade Recommendations
Improving the performance and handling of a 2010 and newer FJ Cruiser can be done in many ways on many different budgets, however, it's always best to not spend your hard earned money twice to get your desired results. With that in mind, Filthy Motorsports recommends choosing one of the following options:
1. Budget Minded Performance:
If you don't have a lot to spend and this vehicle will be your daily driver, we recommend these King coilovers up front and King shocks in the rear with factory front upper control arms and factory rear springs.
2. Ultimate Trail Runner:
For those that want the best performance out of their off-road, trail running, and expedition style vehicle, Filthy Motorsports recommends these King OEM coilovers up front built with extended travel and paired with aftermarket UCAs. In the rear we recommend 1.5" to 2" overload springs paired with these King rear shocks. If you plan to add a significant amount of weight in the form of bumpers, armor, and gear, we'll increase the coilover spring rates accordingly. *For aftermarket lift kits and springs over 2" we would need to build the coilovers and/or shocks to custom lengths.
3. Budget Desert Racer:
Building a race-race ready desert vehicle can get very expensive very quickly. Luckily, this FJ Cruiser platform can become extremely capable with relatively few upgrades. For this type of application we would recommend these King OEM coilovers up front with compression adjusters, built with extended travel, and paired with Camburg UCAs. In the rear, we suggest a good set of 2" lift rear springs paired with the Filthy Motorsports spec 2.5 double bypasses.
4. Race-Spec Long Travel:
For the ultimate off-road racing suspension, contact Filthy Motorsports about a long travel suspension system with coilovers, bypasses, and hydraulic bump stops.

King Compression Adjusters Upgrade
Add 16 levels of compression valving adjustments to your King OEM shocks with King's proprietary compression adjustable reservoirs. Easily switch from a soft, street-friendly ride to stiff, race-ready valving by simply turning the adjustment knob on the reservoirs. Includes custom valving.
External Bypass Tubes Upgrade
For OEM applications where space permits, up to four externally adjustable bypass tubes can be added for compression and rebound zone tuning. Bypass tubes are placed in strategic areas on the shock and are paired with special valving for the ultimate shock setup.

Camburg Upper Control Arm Upgrade
Camburg desert racing upper control arms feature welded and heat treated chromoly arms, over-sized uniball joints, and polyurethane bushings or heim joints for added strength, increased wheel travel, and improved long-travel geometry for better off-road handling.
King OEM Performance Shock Upgrade Kits
are direct bolt-on replacement shocks and/or coilovers for your vehicle and come custom tuned for the ultimate balance of on-road handling and off-road performance. They include all of the necessary hardware you need for a bolt-on installation that can easily be done over the weekend. Custom length shafts and cylinders are available to work with any brand and size lift kit. Additional options include compression adjusting reservoirs, custom colors, internal or external bypass tubes, and race-spec valving.
Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding
All OEM upgrade shocks and coilovers are hand-built with the same parts as all of King's other Performance Race Series shocks. They are completely serviceable, tunable, and rebuildable to last a lifetime and it only requires a few simple hand tools, a few hours, and the appropriate King replacement parts from Filthy Motorsports. If you prefer not to do the work yourself, you can always bring (or send) your shocks to us and we will service them for you within one business day.
