Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations

Toyota Tacoma Gen. 2 and 3 Trucks are extremely popular and Filthy Motorsports works with customers every day doing everything from simple King shock replacements (like this kit), to full race-spec long travel kits, and many solid axle swaps. These trucks are an excellent platform, but there are a few very important tips that we have to keep in mind to build them well:

1. The rear shock mounts are very close together on these trucks so King has to use every trick in their book to make a set of 2.5 smoothies fit and work with the factory leaf springs. As a result, the King OEM rear shocks will only work with the factory Toyota leaf springs. If you plan to install lift blocks, overload springs, or long travel leaf springs, you will either need a rear shock relocation kit or use a lower grade shock with smaller components for more travel.

2. The front suspension geometry is very tight with about 8" of wheel travel leveraged to about 4" of movement on the coilover. For the best performance, the coilovers should be set at mid-shaft or about 2" over stock height. For added movement, an aftermarket upper control arm (UCA) can be used to allow for an extra 3/4" of down travel when the coilovers are built with the extended travel option.

3. DO NOT use coilover pre-load to lift the vehicle over 2.5". The factory geometry works best at about 1.5" to 2" over stock and lifting it more than that puts the CV shafts, steering linkages, tie rod ends, and control arms at steeper angles which reduces ride quality significantly and causes those components to wear out faster. If you want more than 2.5" of lift AND excellent performance, you will need an aftermarket lift kit that drops the lower control arm and front differential.

Complete Suspension Upgrade Recommendations

Improving the performance and handling of a Gen. 2 and 3 Toyota Tacoma can be done in many ways on many different budgets, however, it's always best to not spend your hard earned money twice to get your desired results. With that in mind, Filthy Motorsports recommends choosing one of the following options:

1. Budget Minded Work Truck: If you don't have a lot to spend and you still use your truck to tow and haul, we recommend simply replacing the front coilovers with these King OEM front coilovers and then find a set of cheaper Bilstein shocks for the rear. *Rear king shocks can always be added later.

2. Best Bang For Your Buck: For those that want to maximize the performance and handling of their Tacoma while keeping it mostly stock, this complete King OEM kit, front and rear with the factory UCAs and rear leafs is the way to go. *Aftermarket UCAs can always be added later.

3. Best Performance and Ride: Due to the limitations of the rear shock mounts, getting the best performance out of a Gen. 2 or 3 Tacoma requires a bit more work. Filthy Motorsports recommends the following package:
  • Front King Coilovers built with Compression Adjusters and Extended Travel.
  • Camburg or Total Chaos aftermarket Upper Control Arms (UCAs).
  • Rear Deaver Leaf Springs (Call Deaver at 714-542-3703 and tell them Filthy is building your shocks.)
  • Rear Shock Relocation Kit (A quick Google search will pull up several good options.)
  • King 2.0 Smoothies or King 2.0 Bypass shocks. (2.5 Bypasses require a bed cage.)
4. Race-Spec Long Travel: For the ultimate off-road racing suspension, contact Filthy Motorsports about a long travel suspension system with coilovers, bypasses, and hydraulic bump stops.

Remember, all orders are treated as custom orders and we will review the spring rates, valving, and configuration to make sure they not only fit the vehicle, but also match your expectations and goals.

Free Spring Exchange Program: All King OEM Coilover Kits are covered by the Filthy Motorsports Free Spring Exchange Program. While we always do our best to select the proper spring for your vehicle, if the ones we send you settle the vehicle too high or too low, let us know and we'll swap them out for you.
