The following King OEM suspension upgrade kits are available for the 1996 through 2004 6-lug Toyota Tacoma:

Front coilovers have reservoirs built into the main cylinder with an internal floating piston (IFP).

**Coilovers set for 1.5-2" over stock height - Lifting more than that will reduce ride quality.**

Important Vehicle Specific Notes and Recommendations

Toyota Tacoma Gen. 1 Trucks are extremely popular and Filthy Motorsports works with customers every day doing everything from simple King shock replacements (like this kit), to full race-spec long travel kits, and many solid axle swaps. These trucks are an excellent platform, but there are a few very important tips that we have to keep in mind to build them well:

1. The rear shock mounts are very close together on these trucks so King has to use every trick in their book to make a set of 2.5 smoothies fit and work with the factory springs with up to 1" lift blocks. If you plan to install any type of lift over 1" tall, you will either need a rear shock relocation kit or use a lower grade shock with smaller components for more travel.

2. The front suspension geometry is very tight with about 7.5" of wheel travel leveraged to about 4" of movement on the coilover. This leaves plenty of room inside the coilover cylinder for King to run an internal reservoir (IFP), yet it also makes the suspension very sensitive to ride height positioning. For the best performance, the coilovers should be set at mid-shaft or about 1.5" over stock height. For added movement, an aftermarket upper control arm (UCA) can be used to allow for an extra 1/2" of down travel when the coilovers are built with the extended travel option.

3. DO NOT use coilover pre-load to lift the vehicle over 2". The factory geometry works best at about 1.5" over stock and lifting it more than that puts the CV shafts, steering linkages, tie rod ends, and control arms at steeper angles which reduces ride quality significantly and causes those components to wear out faster. For these reasons, we highly recommend a 1" differential drop (available in the menu above) for this application. If you want more than 2" of lift AND excellent performance, you will need an aftermarket lift kit that drops the lower control arm and front differential.

Complete Suspension Upgrade Recommendations

Improving the performance and handling of a Gen. 1 Toyota Tacoma trucks can be done in many ways on many different budgets, however, it's always best not to spend your hard earned money twice to get your desired results. With that in mind, Filthy Motorsports recommends choosing one of the following options:

1. Best Performance For a Work Truck: [ $1,785 Delivered ]
If you use your Tacoma as a work truck and need to retain the factory load capacity, we recommend replacing the front struts with these King OEM coilovers and replacing the rear shocks with these King OEM 2.5 rear shocks. Filthy Motorsports will select the proper front coilover springs and shock valving for you to significantly improve the overall ride and handling of the truck and prevent the factory rear leaf springs from unloading.

2. Best Off-Road Performance on a Budget: [ $2,330 Delivered ]
For those that want to maximize the off-road performance and handling of their Tacoma while keeping to a reasonable budget, we recommend this complete King OEM kit, front and rear with SPC upper control arms and 1" front differential drop. In this package, Filthy Motorsports will have the front coilovers built with extended travel for up to 1/2" of extra front down travel up front, and the SPC UCAs will allow you to maximize your tire size and adjust caster and camber for a perfect alignment. The rear shocks will work great with the factory rear leafs and can accommodate up to 1" of lift.

3. Best Ride Quality on a Budget: [ $2,510 Delivered ]
For those that want to improve their ride quality on and off-road, we recommend King OEM coilovers up front with SPC upper control arms with a 1" differential drop paired with Deaver rear leaf springs and Bilstein 5100 rear shocks. The coilovers would be built with extended travel for up to 1/2" of extra front down travel up front, and the SPC UCAs will allow for proper alignment.

4. Best Overall Performance and Ride: [ $3,530 - $5,025 Delivered ]
Due to the limitations of the rear shock mounts, getting the best performance out of a Gen. 1 Tacoma requires a bit more work. Filthy Motorsports recommends the following package:
  • Front King Coilovers with Extended Travel.
  • Camburg or SPC Aftermarket Upper Control Arms (UCAs).
  • Rear Deaver Leaf Springs (Custom tuned for your application.)
  • Total Chaos Rear Shock Relocation Kit.
  • King 2.0 x 10" Smoothie or Double Bypass Shocks
  • Spidertrax 1.25" Rear Wheel Spacers (Required).
  • Optional Rear Hydraulic Bump Stop Kit.
5. Race-Spec Long Travel:
For the ultimate off-road racing suspension, contact Filthy Motorsports about a long travel suspension system with coilovers, bypasses, and hydraulic bump stops.

King Compression Adjusters Upgrade
Add 16 levels of compression valving adjustments to your King OEM shocks with King's proprietary compression adjustable reservoirs. Easily switch from a soft, street-friendly ride to stiff, race-ready valving by simply turning the adjustment knob on the reservoirs. Includes custom valving.

King Internal Bypass (IBP) Upgrade
Upgrade your King OEM shocks with an Internal Bypass that consists of a secondary piston and a tapered metering rod that gradually increases the compression valving during the last few inches of compression travel and ultimately serves as a built-in hydraulic bump stop.

External Bypass Tubes Upgrade
For OEM applications where space permits, up to four externally adjustable bypass tubes can be added for compression and rebound zone tuning. Bypass tubes are placed in strategic areas on the shock and are paired with special valving for the ultimate shock setup.

Custom Colors and Finishes

SPC UCAs SPC Adjustable Upper Control Arms
SPC upper control arms feature a greaseable, heavy duty, zero-play, high-misalignment ball joint for increased down travel and significantly improved durability and are adjustable ± 2.0° in camber and -1.0° to +3.0° in caster for perfect alignment.

Camburg UCAs Camburg Racing Upper Control Arms
Camburg desert racing upper control arms feature welded and heat treated chromoly arms, over-sized uniball joints, and polyurethane bushings or heim joints for added strength, increased wheel travel, and improved long-travel geometry for aggressive off-road driving.

King OEM Performance Shock Upgrade Kits are direct bolt-on replacement shocks and/or coilovers for your vehicle and come custom tuned for the ultimate balance of on-road handling and off-road performance. They include all of the necessary hardware you need for a bolt-on installation that can easily be done over the weekend. Custom length shafts and cylinders are available to work with any brand and size lift kit. Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding
All OEM upgrade shocks and coilovers are hand-built with the same parts as all of King's other Performance Race Series shocks. They are completely serviceable, tunable, and rebuildable to last a lifetime and it only requires a few simple hand tools, a few hours, and the appropriate King replacement parts from Filthy Motorsports. If you prefer not to do the work yourself, you can always bring (or send) your shocks to us and we will service them for you.
